PIC OF THE WEEK Pearl by Wildago 15 March 2010
This was the very first painting of Pearl and my third painting ever. It was painted in early summer 2008 using acrylics on canvas. In the sketchbook she had yellow hair and wasn't wearing pearls but "Pearl" emerged the way she wanted to and ended up as quirky but glam redhead. Little did I know she would create such a stir. Her looks have evolved since then but this version remains a firm favourite.

PIC OF THE WEEK British Intelligence by Wildago 8 March 2010
Pearl's mother, Mother-of-Pearl, is stepping out onto the red carpet to honour a 70th birthday. For the occasion she has borrowed the birthday girl's mobile phone, fabulous purple ball gown, and Radley handbag. The film, British Intelligence, is also a product of 1940. I felt the movie start time was the safest place to reveal her age. Birthday commissions make ideal gifts.

PIC OF THE WEEK 3D Pearl and Friends by Wildago 1 March 2010
After completing seven commissions for the Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival in November 2009, I was feeling inspired by cinema and thought it would be fun to show some of the Pearl and Friends characters at the pictures. You may recognise Pearl, Irene the cat, Edmund, and Smokey in the front but I don't know who the people are in the back. Perhaps they will emerge as part of the Pearl and Friends story in future. Smokey's cigar smoke was useful in allowing me to show off Edmund's single spring of hair. This is one of my favourite pieces and I still have the original. It's large at 16x17 inches and has a bit of wow factor in its deep French mount and glossy black frame.

PIC OF THE WEEK Super 8 by Wildago 22 February 2010
Super 8 now hangs in a film maker's office in Montreal. It features Pearl and Edmund at a video-making workshop and is one of seven paintings commissioned by the Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival 2009. Pearl and Edmund were invited to attend the Festival as delegates and I was asked to portray their activities through paintings that would be awarded to film makers as unique trophies.
Pearl and Edmund still haven't met but this is just one of many scenarios where they could have met. It's only a matter of time ...

PIC OF THE WEEK Todd Meets Edmund by Wildago 15 February 2010
When I first started working with Tim the publisher to produce the limited edition prints, we wanted the nine images to introduce the story of Pearl and Friends. This painting shows how Edmund became a dog owner. With such a busy lifestyle it seemed the only way to meet was by accident. When you see Todd in any other painting he is wearing a bright red collar that Edmund gave him. The dog has a lovable nature that reminds me of my brother who is also called Todd. My brother has dealt with major challenges in his life and yet he is consistently positive, giving his friendship unconditionally to all who are lucky enough to know him. I try to depict those qualities in Edmund's loyal canine companion.

PIC OF THE WEEK Pearl Delayed by Wildago 8 February 2010
"Pearl Delayed" was a fun collaboration with Maura, a jet-setting lady who lives in New York City, and a fan of Pearl from the beginning. She came up with the idea to commission Pearl in an air travel scenario with her champagne, mobile phone, fancy briefcase etc. We went to and fro with sketches before settling on this image. The departure board lists actual flights taken by Maura during her extensive travels. The designer laptop case is covered in little M's for Maura. All of this was accomplished through emails and DHL courier to transport Pearl safely from England to the Big Apple. The finished work is a 12x16 inch acrylic painting in a deep French mount. It will take pride of place in Maura's New York City apartment.

PIC OF THE WEEK Pearl Performs by Wildago 1 February 2010
Occasionally Pearl and Edmund end up in the same painting even though they do not know each other. Obviously it is just a matter of time before they do meet. When this happens, will Cupid strike? Pearl is so glamorous and Edmund is ... er ... well not exactly drop-dead gorgeous. But he has many gifts, not the least among which is musical ability.
This painting was one of the nine selected for publication as a limited edition print. The collection introduces Pearl and Friends.

PIC OF THE WEEK Edmund Rides by Wildago 25 January 2010
The six Edmund paintings produced before this one were solely the artist's own creation. EDMUND RIDES, however, is an example of how a Wildago collector participated in the character development of Pearl and Friends.
So EDMUND RIDES was the first commissioned Edmund. It was a Christmas gift for Pete the cyclist from his wife. In the painting, Edmund has borrowed Pete's red cycling jersey and helmet. The shorts with polka dots slipping away -- as they do in all Edmund paintings -- belong to Edmund himself.
In the sketchbook Edmund did not wear a helmet which is out of character for both Pete and Edmund. (Good lads!) Since cycling helmets have air vents anyway, one was added to the front to accommodate Edmund's single sprig of hair.
The lady who commissioned this painting is called Irene. She has the strength of a tiger and the gentleness of a kitten. It seemed only right that Pearl's cat should bear her name.

PIC OF THE WEEK Potted Bunny by Wildago 17 January 2010
Potted Bunny is not part of the Pearl and Friends series. It represents Jo, the lady who commissioned it. This attractive café owner had just finished a kitchen renovation with pink and black accents. She is a very fit lady and also the keeper of a challenging indoor rabbit called Dave. Dave is often in the bad books for eating expensive lingerie, phone cables, and handbag straps. Jo is usually on the brink of getting rid of Dave, but everyone knows she loves him to bits. This 16x20-inch acrylic painting looks fab in the trendy new kitchen.
