brick by brick

26/12/2021

In 1392 Valencian architect Pere Balaguer began to oversee the six year construction of the Serranos Towers, a monumental gateway into Valencia and important landmark to this day. In September Steve and I went to Valencia to photograph the gothic building so that it could be reproduced as a painting. A high-quality Creative Commons photo was ultimately used as the main visual reference for its fine detail, lighting and shadows, thanks to photographer Diego Delso (CC BY-SA delso.photo). The portrait measures 1.4 square metres. Three months of working on this project has resulted in tremendous satisfaction, a little more knowledge of Spanish history, and new friends made along the way. Today the painting was picked up for delivery to its home in Valencia.
